Royal Jordanian Airlines (RJ) has welcomed its 17th Airbus A320neo Family aircraft to its fleet, marking another milestone in the implementation of the airline’s comprehensive strategy to modernize and expand its fleet, strengthen operational capabilities, support its growth plans and enhance the travel experience for passengers.
The arrival of the new aircraft is part of RJ’s ongoing fleet modernization program, which has seen 10 new aircraft of various types join the fleet since the beginning of this year, bringing Royal Jordanian’s total fleet to 36 modern aircraft. The program reflects the airline’s commitment to building a more efficient and modern fleet capable of supporting its growth ambitions and the continued expansion of its route network.
Royal Jordanian Vice Chairman and CEO Samer Majali said the arrival of the 17th Airbus A320neo Family aircraft represents another important milestone in the national carrier’s fleet modernization journey. He emphasized that continued investment in new generation aircraft strengthens operational efficiency and competitiveness while providing passengers with a more advanced and comfortable travel experience.
Majali added that the Airbus A320neo Family plays a key role in operating RJ’s short and medium haul network, serving destinations across the Middle East, the Gulf, Africa and Europe. An additional aircraft is scheduled to join the fleet in December, bringing the number of A320neo Family aircraft to 18 by the end of 2026. Two further aircraft are expected to join in 2027 and 2028, bringing the total to 20.
An additional Airbus A321 will also join the fleet next year. Meanwhile, RJ has designated three Airbus A320neo aircraft to offer its Premium Economy service, providing passengers with an option positioned between Economy Class and its Crown Class business-class product.
As part of its long-haul fleet expansion, Royal Jordanian has added two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners this year, with a third scheduled for delivery in 2027. The airline’s plan is to grow its 787-9 fleet to nine aircraft, which will join progressively over the coming years.
Majali said the expansion of the Boeing 787-9 fleet supports RJ’s plans to grow its long-haul network, given the aircraft’s operational efficiency and ability to operate long-distance nonstop services. The aircraft also offer improved fuel efficiency and modern onboard features, including Wi-Fi connectivity and advanced in-flight entertainment systems. Crown Class cabins feature fully lie-flat seats, providing greater comfort for passengers on long-haul journeys.
In parallel with the introduction of new aircraft, Royal Jordanian has implemented a comprehensive upgrade program for its existing fleet of seven Boeing 787-8 aircraft. The program includes the installation of modern connectivity systems providing onboard Wi-Fi, cabin refurbishments in line with the airline’s standards, and the complete repainting of the aircraft in Royal Jordanian’s new colors and visual identity. These enhancements are designed to further improve the passenger experience and elevate onboard service standards.
Royal Jordanian also currently operates eight new generation Embraer E2 aircraft, which play an important role in serving its regional network, offering operational efficiency and the flexibility to serve destinations with varying levels of demand.
Majali emphasized that fleet modernization and network expansion are being implemented as part of a carefully considered strategic approach that balances growth with market requirements, while supporting the national carrier’s role in advancing Jordan’s tourism strategy, improving operational efficiency and strengthening financial sustainability.
He added that the airline’s forward strategy and fleet modernization plan underwent all required stages of assessment and approval, based on clear and transparent principles and in accordance with applicable regulations, best practices, and the respective authorities granted to executive management and the Board of Directors.
The introduction of new aircraft is a strategic investment aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening an airline’s competitive position. At the same time, such investment has financial and accounting implications under applicable international accounting standards, resulting in increases in both assets and liabilities.
As a significant number of new aircraft are added to the fleet, lease liabilities and financing costs consequently increase. Aircraft economics should therefore not be assessed solely on the basis of monthly lease payments, but rather on the total economic cost of ownership and operation and the aircraft’s overall contribution to profitability. This includes lower fuel consumption compared with older-generation aircraft, reduced operating and maintenance costs, improved economic efficiency and an enhanced onboard product all of which contribute to strengthening the airline’s competitiveness through a newer and more efficient fleet.
Majali said Royal Jordanian’s financial and operational indicators demonstrate the airline’s ability to steadily implement its strategic plans despite the exceptional challenges facing the aviation industry in the region.
He noted that RJ recorded positive financial results during the first half of 2026, alongside growth in revenues, passenger numbers and overall operations. These results reinforce the airline’s strategy of investing in newer, more efficient aircraft while pursuing disciplined network expansion to meet future demand and enhance the national carrier’s competitiveness.
Majali added that fleet modernization and network expansion further strengthen Royal Jordanian’s role in stimulating tourism, enhancing Jordan’s air connectivity and reinforcing Amman’s position as a regional air transport hub. He stressed that the airline will continue investing in its future to support sustainable growth and strengthen its competitiveness regionally and internationally.
In parallel, Royal Jordanian continues to expand its global network. New destinations include Misrata, Munich, Hamburg, Sharjah, Alexandria, Dallas, Vienna and Tashkent, as the airline works toward expanding its network to approximately 60 destinations over the coming years.
